Grandma's Crocheted Popcorn Pinwheel Bedspread...

I started a Popcorn Pinwheel Bedspread... Frances Johnson is a hero among many crocheting women, her bedspread will be remembered for years. It took her 67 years to finish it and it's beautiful. Here's the video link to her showing it...
Here's the pattern...

MOTIF . . . Starting at center, ch 12, join with sl st.

1st rnd: Ch 3, 23 dc in ring. Join to 3rd st of ch-3.

2nd rnd: Ch 3, 4 dc in same place as sl st; drop st from hook, insert hook back in 3rd st of ch-3 first made and draw loop through the one on hook (a pc st). * Ch 5, skip 2 dc, dc in next dc, ch 2, 5 dc in next dc; drop st from hook, insert hook back in last ch made and draw loop through the one on hook (a pc st). Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, sl st at tip of first pc st made.

3rd rnd: Sl st in ch-5 sp, ch 3 and complete a pc st; * ch 2, a pc st, ch 5, dc in next sp, ch 2, a pc st. Repeat from * around, ending with ch 2, sl st at tip of 1st pc st made.

*I just wanted to add this here, because a couple of people have gotten confused on this 3rd rnd with the "ch 3 and complete a pc st", at the beginning of this round. It only means the ch 3 will be the first dc of the pc, so you'll have ch 3 and 4dc to make the 5 dc pc. Just enlarge the above photo and you'll see it.

4th rnd: Sl st in next sp (between pc sts), ch 3 and complete a pc st; * ch 2, in next ch-5 sp make 2 pc sts with ch-2 between; ch 5, dc in next sp, ch 2, pc st in sp between 2 pc sts. Repeat from * around, ending as before.

5th and 6th rnds: Same as 4th rnd, making pc sts between pc sts of previous rnd and 2 pc sts in ch-5 sp, always making ch-2 between pc sts (4 pc sts in each group on 5th rnd; 5 pc sts in each group on 6th rnd).

7th rnd: Sl st in next sp (between 1st 2 pc sts), ch 3 and complete a pc st; * (ch 2, pc st between next 2 pc sts) 3 times; ch 3, dc at tip of next pc st, ch 3, dc in ch-5 sp, ch 3, dc in next sp, ch 2, pc st between next 2 pc sts. Repeat from * around. Join.

8th rnd: * 3 pc sts between pc sts of previous rnd, with ch-2 between; ch 3, dc at tip of next pc st; (ch 3, dc in next sp) 4 times; ch 2 and repeat from * around. Join.

9th rnd: * 2 pc sts between pc sts of previous rnd, with ch-2 between; ch 3, dc at tip of next pc st; (ch 3, dc in next sp) 6 times, ch 2. Repeat from * around. Join.

10th rnd: Sl st in sp (between pc sts), ch 3 and complete a pc st; * (ch 3, dc in next sp) 3 times; ch 3, skip next dc and sp; in next dc make 3 tr, ch 3, 3 tr, ch 3, skip next sp and dc; dc in next sp; (ch 3, dc in next sp) twice, ch 2, pc st between pc sts of previous rnd. Repeat from * around. Join and fasten off. She said in the video she put 31 motifs across, (she calls them little doilies, so cute), and 30 motifs from head to foot for the spread. :D Use a sc to join motifs.

Here's a still shot of Frances' motif and click to enlarge.

Also pc is popcorn stitch, so where it just says do a pc, you'll know to work those 5 dc, here's a youtube video of how to do the popcorn for anyone new to it... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CF-83OSOSYg

BTW, I'm sorry I don't have the border around instructions, it's all I had written down. You can make any border you want and maybe someone has a photo of it online to go by.

  2. What stitch was used to piece the motif's together to form the bedspread?

  3. I used a size 10 cotton thread and a steel crochet hook size 7.

  4. I checked with my mom (Frances) and she said she thought her hook was a size 6. We have it in a shadow box frame, and I can't see the number. You're right about using the sc to connect the pinwheels. I do want to say thank you to everyone for your interest in the bedspread - all of the lovely and thoughtful comments have been very affirming and encouraging to her!

  6. Elaine and Steve, Frances is awesome. I can't tell you how much respect I have for her as I know so many others do that love crocheting. Hours upon hours of love she put in finishing that spread, my goodness. I've seen so many comments on the web talking about her and the spread.

  8. The bedspread is totally gorgeous and the story brought tears to my eyes. What a labor of love for sure. I have 12 crochet thread and was wondering what hook should I be using. I bought the #7 as is stated in the pattern. I am not familiar with the smaller sized crochet hooks. Look forwarding to hearing from you.

  9. Thank you Winter for your tips. I have never worked with a hook smaller than E. So, I will surely need to use the magnifier lens that you wear around your neck to see what you are stitching, is a must. I will buy the 6 hook as well and see which is better. I will also be crocheting it on an E hook to see how it's supposed to go since I have never used thread. Now that I have so much of it I have to use it.

  10. Such a beautiful Lady! And she is so talented. I love this pattern and she's motivated me to start making one. It may well take me 67 years to finish mine as well! Thank you so much for sharing this. I was just strolling through YouTube and found it. I'm so glad that I did. Thanks Again!

  11. What a beautiful Lady! And she is so talented. She has motivated me to try my hand at making one. It will probably take me longer than 67 years! Thank you for sharing this. I was strolling through YouTube and found the vid. I really enjoyed watching it and I'm amazed at the beauty of this project.

  12. Hi, I use a 10 size thread and a 7 hook, it's my favorite in both. A 10 is a bedspread thread and in buying a bigger ball of thread to go further, like Aunt Lydia, more economical. But you can use whatever you like, because if you find a color you love and don't care about the price it's worth it. All the work it takes, the bedspread should be something you love working on and be satisfied. If the 7 feels good with the 12 thread and you like the size do that or you can try a 6. I just think 7 is a better size for me.

  13. I used to do alot of thread work, only some now, because it is hard on your eyes. I made little booties for my Granddaughter and was so glad when I finished them, because goodness. :) Let me know how it works out for you, bet it will be beautiful.

  15. The precious Ms. Frances Johnson has inspired me to start my own popcorn pinwheel bedspread. I don't have 67 years to finish since I'm already 57. Using the figures she quotes in her video I figure if I work an hour a day I can finish it an about 11 years. If I don't make it that long I'm sure my lovely DIL can finish it for me :).

  16. The precious Ms. Frances Johnson has inspired me to start my own Popcorn Pinwheel Bedspread. I don't have 67 years to finish it since I'm already 56. But using the figures she quotes in her video I calculate that if I work an hour a day I can finish it in 11 years if I last that long. If not, my wonderful daughter-in-law will finish it for me.

  17. I understand what you're saying, it will take me so long, because I keep getting distracted with making other things. :)
